Watching the Disappearance of Transparency | Jennessa Bates

Final Project

The theme I wanted to explore was transparency to opacity. Previously I made a video sketch of three glass jars that had ink dropped into them. I remember being told that I should focus on one jar and watch the patterns of the ink swirl in the water. I decided to take one jar, record closely to my subject and focus on the ink. I started to drop more and more colours into the jar to bring up the opacity, as this was my theme that I wanted to explore. First I recorded the video that had unwanted audio in the background. To solve this problem I made my own sounds, meaning I recorded the drips, the clock and some background noises from my house. Every drop was edited, which was tedious, but was worth it. The making of this film was satisfying, it helped me to focus and forget the current issues of the world.

Final Project

I wanted to produce something that would lighten spirits during this trying time. I drew on comedy and jokes as my source of entertainment while also finding a way to incorporate a dynamic way to present what I shot. The majority of my editing was in camera. I planned it all out on paper first and then moved to shooting. Prep work helped a lot so that I knew exactly what I was doing. This made editing and small tweaks very easy to do in a timely manner. I had so much fun shooting this and I hope you all enjoy!

Final Project

I got lucky with my video after classes were canceled and we had to work from home. I had access to a computer still that could handle Premiere and I had shot everything before I had to return the camera so I continued with my original idea for a projection. I was interested in creating something that focused on light, layers, something like an altered state. Ideally I wanted the video to be projected onto a big wall or a really big piece of fabric in a kind of transitory space like a stairwell or hallway. As for the imagery, I was really inspired by the book Woman and Nature by Susan Griffin. She delves into history and mythology to look at how women are often portrayed as being more connected to nature, or the physical world, or the “wild.” I wish the quality was better but it has to be so small to upload.

I made the music in a program called Maschine that my boyfriend has, I've spent quite a bit of time now playing around with the software so I wanted to try it out and make something for the video. 

Work in Progress | María Rivière

The video "Painting in Progress" is in the context of the final project for "Painting Studio Material, Colour, Space" course. To shoot the video, I used a mobile phone camera. After several attempts and few tries, in this one, I think I suggest the idea behind it. When the painting work is finished, I will shoot another video with the same intention, with aerial views of work materials, and surfaces where the eye of the Camera scans, surveys table details like paint tubes, palette and reference images (in close-up) and painting details. I will continue with the eye of the camera surveying details of the painting and then revealing the entire painting. At the same time, improving camera movements to provide a clear visual narration.

Music track "Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major " Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. I included this piece to the video because it is the type of music I listen to when working at home.

How to: Get Ready | Matthias Chiefcalf

I decided to do a how-to video in getting ready throughout the day. I edit clips together that show activities people would do to get ready. Pairing sequences in relation to previous or sequel clips. I used adobe premiere pro to sequence the edits.

How to be a Dog | Kyla Organ

I decided to keep my video as simple and homely as possible because of the domestic setting and the simplicity of a dog's life. That's the reason I kept the video portrait instead of the typical landscape that most videos are in and why the video isn't always the greatest quality.

My video was inspired by my german shepard Nova. I think she is the only one who is actually happy about this quarantine, because she gets so much attention now that everyone is home all day. I hope that with everything that's going on that this video will make you smile or get your mind off the pressures of ending the school year like this. I had a lot of fun following Nova around for a couple of days so I hope you all enjoy it.

Empty Streets | María Rivière

The sequencing of the photographs is ordered to impress that this event is happening everywhere at the same time. The intention of the narrative is to evoke feelings of being overwhelmed by the present time while inspiring hope. The photographs were collected over the past few weeks, and they are the work of photographers from around the world to give testimony of what is going on.

In this work I explore ideas and focus on empty streets for the meaning that it carries, streets are public areas that are part of the daily experience of people where the collective and the individual are interrelated. I looked for images where the camera is exposing the emptiness of the streets around the world and wide and large boulevards that emphasize the absence of pedestrian activity on sidewalks, public transit, and individual automobile traffic. The last part of the video has a sequencing of large avenues suggesting hope and ending with bright natural light that represents life. 

I invested a lot of time sketching, exploring ideas, planning, and making experimental videos with different content, using a variety of techniques, like aerial views, close-up, pan, frame, that are not reflected in the video "Empty Streets", which is also a sketch with feelings and ideas to continue exploring.

   

I was inspired by William Wegman, Newscast, 1974 and Penelope Umbrico's works with photographs.

Editing software: Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Photo, Video and Sound applications. I used search engines and news articles to find photographs, authors and places.

Feeling Green | Jason Ranaghan

For my final media arts project I wanted to create an experimental montage using extreme close-ups of plants around my home. Being stuck inside has made me miss the freedom of being able to come and go as I please and explore. I wanted to capture the essence of lush greenery in a domestic setting.

Lights from the Inside | Bryson Quilliams

I wanted to work with time lapse again but I didn't want it to be stagnant. So I decided to move while I did a time lapse, which led me to driving around in a car. My goal was just to create a video of me driving around in a time lapse but I thought it was missing something. I noticed that the lights of the city almost drowned out the video so I decided to run with that and make the video about the light instead incorporating lots of different colors I ended up with something completely different than I imagined but I really enjoyed the twisted way it turned out. The title derived from me both being inside a car while filming the video and by making most of the light from inside my home in premier.

The quality dropped significantly when I uploaded it. I will try to fix that.

A Suite of Looks | Tia Bunnage

For my final project, I wanted to create a video in response to a piece of music. I had a hard time picking out which song to respond to as 1. I love so much music and 2. I wanted to respect copyright laws. Holst is one of my all-time favourite composers and I wanted to pay homage to his work. I eventually decided on Gustav Holsts’ suite by the name: The planets. I decided on the suite because it was one of the few pieces that had recordings in the public domain. The variety of movements also allowed me to have a greater range of expression in my work.

I decided to respond through the use of makeup, costume and video. Makeup and costume are processes I am quite familiar with and have experience doing. I created the looks by listening to each movement, then creating a look based on the impression it gave me, rather than basing them off of the astrological character. The phone recording, however, was something I had less experience with, and I am pleasantly surprised with the quality a phone can be capable of! Overall I took somewhere around 150 short videos of myself in the looks and not even half of that made it to the final cut, you never realize you have a set of mannerisms until you look at five videos of yourself doing the same three poses.

A Field Snowshoe | Sydney Andres

Hey everyone! This is my final piece for this class, and I chose to do a documentation of one of the snowshoeing adventures I have been so lucky to enjoy since coming home. This video uses my natural movements to video as the frame gets flipped and became interesting. This video contains explores the natural movements of the walk that my phone camera experiences. I played around with the speed of the videos as well.

This video was taken with my phone camera and edited in the imovies app on my phone as well. 

You Can Run | Jenson Armstrong

 

For my project, I decided to make a narrative: A movie trailer. In an attempt to make a horror movie trailer, I focused on the ideas of underexposure, infrasound, and suspense.

To make this piece, the actors and I went down to the river, where we filmed all the video of the hiker first. We then recorded the stalker. Once the footage was finished, we recorded the audio. In hindsight, it would have been better to record the audio at the same time. This made the audio vs video awkward. I then took the footage and audio to the lab where I edited it all together.
