For my final project, I wanted to create a video in response to a piece of music. I had a hard time picking out which song to respond to as 1. I love so much music and 2. I wanted to respect copyright laws. Holst is one of my all-time favourite composers and I wanted to pay homage to his work. I eventually decided on Gustav Holsts’ suite by the name: The planets. I decided on the suite because it was one of the few pieces that had recordings in the public domain. The variety of movements also allowed me to have a greater range of expression in my work.
I decided to respond through the use of makeup, costume and video. Makeup and costume are processes I am quite familiar with and have experience doing. I created the looks by listening to each movement, then creating a look based on the impression it gave me, rather than basing them off of the astrological character. The phone recording, however, was something I had less experience with, and I am pleasantly surprised with the quality a phone can be capable of! Overall I took somewhere around 150 short videos of myself in the looks and not even half of that made it to the final cut, you never realize you have a set of mannerisms until you look at five videos of yourself doing the same three poses.

Really enjoy how you incorporated the music into the type and use of make up that you applied to yourself to represent the planets and how the music made you feel. Did you think about having your whole body more incorporated with in these videos? Or did you just want your head to represent as the "planets" as your head would be the closest shape to a planet in a sense. As a viewer I can feel that the use of the elements of make up and costume are familiar to you and I feel the costumes worked with what you were wanting to portray.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your feedback! If I had the materials for a full out look I absolutely would have. Maybe i'll revisit the idea someday.
DeleteI adore Holst's work. I really enjoyed your representations of the planets through the exploration of light and make up. I found the different colours and over exposure intriguing. Adding on to Sydney, I would like to have seen more of the body in an anthropomorphized version of the planets, but I understand that through time constraints and a difference of mental images that we would have different outlooks at of the same project.
ReplyDeleteIdeally yes I would have liked full out costumes, the issue was materials. I don't really have much costume pieces that would have worked to my standard, so I decided just to do it selfie style.
DeleteAnd thanks for the feedback as well, I apreciate it! :)
ReplyDeleteWow! I really enjoy your exploration of makeup in association with the music. It is interesting as a viewer to find how your associations link and how you meant them to react in relation to each other. I love the way this turned out. I found myself focused on your makeup, analyzing the details while also being consumed by the music itself. Well done.
ReplyDeleteTia, your work captures your intention of responding to a piece of music. Shows understanding of dramatic techniques, use of makeup in an imaginative way, and interest in music. Making a video like yours take a lot of time rehearsing, watching yourself and making self critique. I like the acting of your lizard very much. Thank you!

Nice job on your make-up! I think my favourite make-up was Mars, and the music was so power and dramatic which fits the theme of the character. I love the effort you put into each style, great job!
ReplyDeleteHi, Tia!
ReplyDeleteNice title sequences. All of your text was clear and easy to read.
I appreciated how this video played with my expectations toward YouTube makeup videos. Your looks were dramatic and unexpected, considering that you could only use what you had on hand. The costume elements were intriguing and I enjoyed how you deviated away from known astrological influences. If you were to do something similar again I would encourage you to play with more objects, as the video presents mostly only face shots-- but there was still a lot to look at and take in. I particularly liked how playful you were in the Mars segment.
