Lights from the Inside | Bryson Quilliams

I wanted to work with time lapse again but I didn't want it to be stagnant. So I decided to move while I did a time lapse, which led me to driving around in a car. My goal was just to create a video of me driving around in a time lapse but I thought it was missing something. I noticed that the lights of the city almost drowned out the video so I decided to run with that and make the video about the light instead incorporating lots of different colors I ended up with something completely different than I imagined but I really enjoyed the twisted way it turned out. The title derived from me both being inside a car while filming the video and by making most of the light from inside my home in premier.

The quality dropped significantly when I uploaded it. I will try to fix that.

  1. I think the low quality helped with how the light was displayed especially with the different colors you used and with the time lapse quality. The movement with in the work is really interesting because the movement of a vehicle is dismissed in a sense because we are so used to how it moves, but when it gets sped up it creates a slithering effect.

  2. The qThe change of lights, movements, and quality drew me in and had me intrigued. I loved how the lighting continued from frame to frame, not just when you were under a street light. However, to make the piece stronger, I would have added audio, just to keep the audiance more engaged.

  3. This is really cool! It part reminds me of video game racing levels (like rainbow road from Mario Kart) and part makes me feel like there is no car and that i'm running or something. I Like how you timed the colour change to the street lights, that was a good idea. Have a good break, stay safe!

  4. I really enjoy what you did with this. It honestly reminds me of the way a state of euphoria is produced in films as well as a constant state of travel, ie the mundane routine. This video is very captivating as I'm not sure where to look. Rewatching this, I get a new perspective every time as my attention shifts. Good work.

  5. Bryson, The title of your work is very interesting. The lighting effects and colour changing you used in your video, really added a good twist. Your video reminded me of a racing car game, likely I was not crashing into a wall, driving around got me by surprise. I like your idea and interest of exploring time lapsing and, I think you could continue doing that.Time is a really great subject.

  6. The different colours of lights was really smart! I not too sure what encourage you to change the colours, was it each time you stop at lights? The low quality was an interesting element to the film, especially the shapes of the cars, buildings, and lights.

  7. Hi, Bryson!

This really reminds me of a sequence one of my favourite films, Daisies (1966): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKApqA9wT1A

The use of colour is disorienting to a degree and it reminds me of the concept of defamiliarization: making the everyday strange in order to better understand it. To this end, I don't find the quality to be an issue.

To further develop this work I would consider the use of sound or music. Driving has an auditory component for many. Lastly, I had hoped for the arrival at a destination at the end of the video, even perhaps simply pulling into a parking lot.

Overall, I enjoyed the aesthetic experience that you have created here. The title is intriguing as well.
