Feeling Green | Jason Ranaghan

For my final media arts project I wanted to create an experimental montage using extreme close-ups of plants around my home. Being stuck inside has made me miss the freedom of being able to come and go as I please and explore. I wanted to capture the essence of lush greenery in a domestic setting.

  1. Really enjoy these moments of greenery, and the abstractness they give when you capture them in close ups and being able to see the details is really intriguing with all the diversity of plants that you have in your home. Would you also incorporate outside greenery as well if you were able to go out and explore? Would it have a different feeling you think if you just did one of outdoor, wild plants?

  2. I enjoyed the shaky movements of the camera as it was zoomed in on the plants. It gave the feeling of the plants moving. Although they appear static, they move with the wind, through transitions in their lives, etc.

  3. I like the theme of this video, I wonder what other household things could be recorded and made to seem non-domestic. I like how even though you're recording all these plants in your home, for the most part they seem like they could be in the outdoors. I think the use of close-up was good for this video!
Have a good break, hopefully we'll all be able to go outside again soon!

  4. I love you plants. Not only does this give perspective into the static nature of these living beings but it also gives insight into your life. Plants are living beings that we care for. Some people prefer some over others. I love how you've chosen to document this. I gives me a scientific documentation feeling while also feeling very comforting (like I'm at home).

  5. Jason, your exploration and close-ups of interior plants make your video interesting and enjoyable. Your search for details shows the purpose of the video and awakes curiosity. I also like to make close-ups videos, but I find really difficult to do it without shaking. You have nice succulent plants at home, and you are taking good care of them!

  7. Hi, Jason!

I enjoyed how you placed the title and I wish it could've floated on screen longer. You have captured a surprising amount of variety of green leafy things, and this video seems like a study of organic texture and form. The camera always seems to be in motion due to how it is handheld. Would a tripod's stability alter the overall mood? Lastly, the plants seemed to have always been shot from above or side, but what about underneath? If the outdoors were an option it would have been interesting to see this montage-like effect continued.
